American Journalism on the Brink

We pay tribute to the life and work of Robert McChesney, who passed away on Tuesday, March 25.

McChesney wrote and fought tirelessly for a more democratic news media system in America, and influenced many of the most prominent media activists today.

McChesney joined our Stripped for Parts team with words of wisdom during our 2022 online panel “What to do About Hedge Funds in Journalism?”, which also served as an important fundraiser that gave us the boost we needed to complete our film. McChesney’s writings on the arguments for public funding of journalism found their way into our film, as did scenes with Free Press, the media reform/media activism organization he co-founded with John Nichols in 2003.

Read the obituary by Jeff Cohen, the founder of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) and more in The Nation, and on the Free Press website.
