Though he is now an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, Rick Goldsmith was once an architecture student at the Rhode Island School of Design, or RISD. “Architecture drew me in because it tapped into my need to build, to create, to envision and to put my mark on the world,” Goldsmith explained in an interview with The Daily Californian. “That’s the joy of creating.”
Goldsmith grew up in New York City, where he learned to appreciate music, film, newspapers and political activism before settling down in Northern California and embarking on his nearly 50-year-long career as a documentary filmmaker. Leading up to local screenings of his latest project, “Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink,” Rick Goldsmith dialed in to discuss his creative background, newest film and hope for the future of journalism.
