On the night of March 13, community members streamed into the Hillside Club in North Berkeley and, across the Bay, into the Roxie Theater in San Francisco to watch Oscar-nominated filmmaker and Bay Area local Rick Goldsmith’s newest documentary, “Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink.” A fresh perspective on the newspaper industry’s past, present and future, Goldsmith’s film acknowledges the essential research and advocacy of journalists, standing up for truth against greed.
An avid newspaper reader since childhood, Rick Goldsmith uses his work to investigate and represent the world of journalism. “Stripped for Parts” is the latest addition to Goldsmith’s documentary trilogy on the subject, following “Tell the Truth and Run: George Seldes and the American Press” in 1996 and “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers” in 2009, both of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. This time, Goldsmith spotlights the journalists resisting and reporting on the New York City hedge fund behind the rapid closure of thousands of local newspapers across the country.
