An audience of about 100 people shook their heads and occasionally gasped as they sat in a screening of Rick Goldsmith’s documentary “Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink” in Napa Sunday.
The film largely focused on journalist Julie Reynolds’ investigative reporting into the dealings of secretive hedge fund Alden Global Capital, which has acquired more than 200 newspapers across the U.S., gutting many of them and shuttering at least four newsrooms.
The screening, part of The Press Democrat’s Trust & Democracy speaker series, which was also co-hosted by NorCal Public Media, stressed the need to explore new methods of funding local journalism in order to protect democracy and the public’s right to be informed.
